To market, to market...to celebrate wool!
Canberra's nationally award winning markets, the Old Bus Depot Markets, is gearing up for its special annual event, A Celebration of Wool, to be held on Sunday 16 May. Now in its fifteenth year at the markets, this spectacular event showcases top quality Australian made wool products from around the country.
"Canberra is in the middle of a wool growing area, and to see what artists and business people with big ideas do with wool is fascinating," said Old Bus Depot Markets manager, Diane Hinds.
"We welcome craftspeople who work with wool from NSW, Victoria and South Australia, and showcase their range of top quality Australian made wool products, many made on their own properties," Ms Hinds continued.
The markets will feature products of the finest quality including hand felted garments and accessories, designer knitwear, millinery, weavings, funky beanies and farm label knitwear. The range of specialist yarns are always a huge drawcard for knitters and include hand carded and hand dyed yarns, natural yarns and Wensleydale yarns. Regional Guilds also give demonstrations of hand spinning, hand felting and other traditional wool based crafts.
Stallholders will include Christine Waring, Canberra's leading milliner, showcasing her winter range, and The Stitch Bitches, a regional Canberra group of knitters in their twenties who knit and work with hand dyed and hand spun yarns. Specialised knitting yarns and weaving supplies will be available from Evelyn Reynolds and Christine Sloane, as well as superb hand knitted jumpers from the design workshop of Jane Slicer-Smith at Signatur Knits. Other participants will have felted bags, beanies galore, wool quilts and bedding, mittens, Fez hats, and fine woollen undergarments – and all just in time for winter!
Located in the Old Bus Depot Building on the Kingston Foreshore, Canberra's premier indoor markets have a contemporary urban feel and promise a pleasurable experience for locals and tourists alike. The Old Bus Depot Markets are open every Sunday from 10am - 4pm. More information available at www.obdm.com.au
