Koh Chang’s Secret Garden: How the Island’s Rainforest is Becoming a Tourism Treasure

Beyond its beaches and sunsets, Koh Chang hides one of Thailand’s richest tropical ecosystems. From rare rainforest flora and century-old botanical discoveries to eco-tourism adventures and conservation-led resorts, the island’s remarkable natural heritage is becoming a powerful attraction for travellers seeking a deeper connection with Thailand.

Beyond the shoreline lies one of Thailand’s most fascinating natural attractions, a vast tropical rainforest filled with rare plant life, rich ecology and a botanical story stretching back more than a century.

Often overlooked by visitors heading straight for the beach, Koh Chang’s rainforest is increasingly becoming one of the island’s most important tourism assets.

Located in Thailand’s eastern Gulf near the Cambodian border, Koh Chang is the country’s second-largest island and forms part of a biologically rich mountain chain extending from Chanthaburi into Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains. Thanks to extraordinary rainfall, between 4,000 and 5,700 millimetres annually, the island supports dense evergreen forests that remain lush throughout the year.

This unique environment has created an ecosystem unlike many of Thailand’s better-known islands.

The island’s forests are home to more than 1,000 recorded plant species, including rare orchids, mangroves, towering dipterocarp trees, medicinal plants and tropical hardwoods. Scientists have identified at least 64 species first documented on Koh Chang itself, highlighting the island’s global botanical significance.

What makes Koh Chang particularly interesting is the way its geography has shaped this biodiversity. Around 10,000 years ago, rising sea levels separated the island from the mainland following the last Ice Age. Yet because the separation occurred relatively recently in geological terms, much of the flora still closely resembles the forests of mainland eastern Thailand.

Long before modern tourism arrived, Koh Chang was already attracting international scientific attention. In 1899, Danish botanist Johannes Schmidt conducted one of the first systematic botanical surveys ever undertaken in Siam. His groundbreaking research laid the foundations for modern botanical study in Thailand and remains influential today.

Now, tourism operators are beginning to recognise that Koh Chang’s appeal extends well beyond beaches and snorkelling.

Eco-tourism experiences such as guided rainforest walks, mangrove kayaking, birdwatching and botanical tours are becoming increasingly popular with travellers seeking more meaningful and educational experiences. Resorts including The Retreat Koh Chang are also embracing sustainability and conservation initiatives, helping visitors better understand the island’s fragile ecosystems.

The island’s protected status has also played an important role. Since the establishment of Mu Ko Chang National Park in 1982, around 70 percent of the island has remained forested, preserving much of its original environment despite growing tourism development.

For many visitors, the rainforest becomes an unexpected highlight. Waterfalls hidden beneath thick jungle canopy, giant ancient trees and the constant soundtrack of tropical birdlife create an atmosphere worlds away from Thailand’s busier tourism hotspots.

As travellers increasingly seek destinations offering authenticity, sustainability and stronger connections to nature, Koh Chang’s botanical richness may prove to be one of its greatest long-term tourism advantages.

In Koh Chang, the real treasure isn’t only found on the beach. Sometimes it’s hidden beneath the forest canopy.
